People with Disabilities

A church, which does not have disabled people in it, is disabling itself.  It’s making itself poor in terms of experience, poor in terms of outlook, poor in terms of fellowship and poor in terms of the wonderful beautiful tapestry of diversity that God wants us to be.”  Pastor Malcolm Duncan

As a church we are passionate about enabling everyone, whatever their abilities, to come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.  In our journey to learn how we can include people with learning disabilities in all aspects of church life we have worked with Prospects, a leading Christian charity for people with learning disabilities.

Hope Street

For many years we have gathered a group of volunteers to support children and young people with learning disabilities to access church life.  All of the people are provided with an adult carer who helps them to access Hope Street on Sunday mornings.  Depending on the level of need children and young people are able to join existing groups within Hope Street with support while others are cared for individually.  All the families really value this level of support as it enables all family members to enjoy a full church experience.

All Age Worship

With Prospects help, we are working hard to ensure our all age services are inclusive. We have introduced many new initiatives to ensure our services are as welcoming as possible.  This has included visual timetables and learning Makaton signing, something everyone in the church is getting to grips with!

We recognise that we are on a journey as a church and still have much to learn but we are keen that we can be guided by those we seek to support as we develop and improve our church services.

WOW!

The first Sunday of each month (except August and January) we offer WOW! - our Wide Open Worship service for people with disabilities and their family members and carers.  This service is designed to encourage people with disabilities to discover and develop a faith in Jesus.

WOW! involves music, drama, dance, prayer, fellowship and our very popular afternoon tea all in a very relaxed atmosphere!  WOW! start at 3-4.30pm in the HUB.  Everyone is welcome to come and experience the love and teachings of Christ.
